Zenna is a chocolate lab about six months old. This pretty girl is friendly and affectionate, and she would make a wonderful companion. She's at the Clare County Animal Shelter in Harrison.

Zaphod is a handsome gray domestic shorthair (DSH) mix cat. He really needs to find a forever home; being at the shelter is very scary for him. He's at the Homeward Bound Animal Shelter in Manistee.

At the same shelter in Manistee, Zags is waiting for someone to love. He's an orange DSH mix kitty who was born in November 2010, and he was the only boy in his litter. His sisters have been adopted, so now it's his turn!

PostHeaderIcon Yorkies Galore!

If you're interested in adopting a Yorkie or Yorkie mix, you're in the right place. Michigan has plenty of dogs that fit the description.

Little Ezra has one of the sweetest faces ever! He's a senior who's absolutely no trouble. He's currently in a foster home with Last Chance Rescue in Howell. (Note: This organization is not affiliated with Last Chance MI, the account I tweet from.)

Here's another senior Yorkie guy; he's at Gratiot County Animal Control in Ithaca, where they refer to him as #166a.

Muffin is a Yorkie/Shih tzu mix, and she sure is pretty! This sweet girl is at Furry Friends Rescue in Brighton.

Peppermint Patty is a senior Yorkie/chihuahua mix in the care of the Midwest Boston Terrier Rescue in Kent City.

Shandy is a Yorkie mix girl at Bellowood in Cedar Springs.

Peke a Tzu Rescue in Trufant has quite a few Yorkies and Yorkie mixes.

Fiona is a Yorkie/Bichon Frisé mix available at Katzenwoofers in Sheridan.

Teddy the Yorkie has been at Second Chance Animal Rescue in Gobles for almost a year!

The Noah Project in Muskegon is taking care of Yorkie/Schnauzer mix Winston and young Yorkie/chihuahua mix Tilly.

That's just a few of the available Yorkies and Yorkie mixes here that are available for adoption! There are several pages listing Yorkshire terriers in Michigan. Nearby states are mixed in when they're closer to the ZIP code you provide than other parts of Michigan; just keep going and you'll find Michigan listings again.

Anyone who is interested in adopting a Yorkshire terrier, either full bred or a mix, should check the Petfinder listings. Whatever age, size, temperament, or genetic mix you're looking for, you're sure to find the right Yorkie for you!

If you're interested in Xavier, please visit his Petfinder listing, which includes three photos of him. In addition, his page at Dogster gives even more info and photos.

PostHeaderIcon Wally and Wyatt

Wally is an adorable young yellow lab mix who's only a year or two old. This happy boy is sweet, funny, and so much more! He's at the Homeward Bound Animal Shelter in Manistee, which is run by the Manistee County Humane Society. The shelter is open Wednesday through Saturday. Check Wally's listing and the shelter's page for more information.

Wyatt is another terrific dog. This AKC-certified German shorthaired pointer is a healthy 6-year-old sweetheart who's great with kids of all ages. The Humane Society of Midland County posted Wyatt's information as a courtesy to his owners, whose small child is allergic to him. Please check his listing to learn more about this wonderful dog.

PostHeaderIcon Virgil

Check out Virgil! He's a pit bull mix at Lifeline for Pound Buddies in Muskegon, which is on Lake Michigan.

Virgil is a terrific guy. In fact, his foster mom raves about how amazing he is! He's great with cats and older kids. He's also sweet, polite, athletic, sensitive, silly, and smart. Wow!

Virgil's Petfinder profile contains three photos and a detailed write-up. He also has a slide show on YouTube.

Does Virgil seem like the guy for you? Lifeline for Pound Buddies has lowered his adoption fee, and it's a huge savings. Check Virgil's listing to learn more about him.

PostHeaderIcon Uma, Unity, and Ursula

Uma, Unity, and Ursula are all in the care of Last Day Dog Rescue in Livonia. Unity needs a foster home, and Uma and Ursula are ready to be adopted.

Uma has been at the rescue since July 2009. Her vet believes she's a purebred red-nosed pit bull. This pretty girl is a sweetheart! She's cuddly and loves to be petted. She also loves to go for rides in the car. She's in a foster home until she can find a forever family.

Unity is a pretty little beagle girl who's looking for a foster home. She's good with kids and dogs. The listing doesn't say much more about her, which probably means she's new at the rescue and they want to get to know her better before making her available for adoption.

Ursula is a beautiful black lab who just barely made it out of the shelter in time, and now she's in a foster home and waiting for a nice forever family. She's a very sweet, lovable girl who's eager to please. She's also good with dogs and cats.

If you're interested in adopting Uma or Ursula, or if you're willing to provide a foster home for Unity, please contact Last Day Dog Rescue.

PostHeaderIcon Trixie

Trixie is a Chinese Crested dog currently at the Benzie County Animal Shelter in Beulah.

Her listing includes two photos but doesn't say much about her at all. She's a senior, and she's looking for a forever family who will give her a lot of love. She still needs to be spayed before she can go home, but the Animal Welfare League of Benzie County will help with the costs.

Please give Trixie a chance! Senior dogs make wonderful pets. You can find out more about her by contacting the shelter.

PostHeaderIcon Smokey

Smokey is a very handsome Siberian husky currently at the Newaygo County Animal Shelter in White Cloud.

Smokey is a nice boy. His listing doesn't give his exact age, merely stating that he is a young adult. It includes three terrific photos of him.

Smokey's status is urgent. According to his page at Dogs in Danger, he is scheduled for euthanasia on April 28 if he isn't adopted before then. Sometimes dogs at that facility get an extension (if other dogs are adopted and space opens up), but it's never a sure thing.

If you're interested in Smokey, please contact the shelter before it's too late.

PostHeaderIcon Reese

If you're considering adopting a larger dog, check out Reese! This big guy weighs 74 pounds!

Reese is a handsome brindle lab/pit bull mix with a great personality, and he's already been neutered. He's only a year or two old, so he's still quite young. Staying at the shelter is making him lonely; he's a very friendly boy, and he would love to go home with a forever family.

He's a shelter favorite! Everyone there loves Reese, and no one understands why he hasn't been adopted yet. His status changed to "urgent" almost three weeks ago, which means it's very important for him to find someone as soon as possible.

Reese is at the Clare County Animal Shelter in Harrison, which is near the junction of US 127 and M-61. If you'd like more information about him, be sure to read his profile.

PostHeaderIcon Quentin

Quentin is a real cutie! This adorable four-year-old Shih Tzu boy ended up at the Peke A Tzu Rescue after being found wandering the streets. Besides being all matted up, he actually had some chicken wire in the mats! It had to be cut out, and Quentin had to get a few stitches from where the wire had poked him. After he was cleaned up, it was easy to see how beautiful his black and white coat is.

Quentin is a terrific little boy. He likes other dogs and loves to play and snuggle. His idea of a perfect forever home is one where he would have a stay-at-home mom or dad. He would love to have another dog to play with, but he's not too sure about kids. He does need a yard with a fence.

The Peke A Tzu Rescue is located in Trufant, which in in Montcalm County. If you're interested in Quentin, please check his profile for more information.

PostHeaderIcon Pickles

Pickles is a very handsome golden retriever/lab mix who's looking for love and attention. He is currently at the Benzie County Animal Shelter in Beulah.

Although his listing doesn't specify his age, it does say that he's "mature." He's a bit overweight, so he'll need regular exercise and a healthy diet.

Won't you give this older guy the love and attention he needs? He'll give it right back to you!

PostHeaderIcon Osceola County Animal Shelter

The Osceola County Animal Shelter is located in Reed City, at the crossroads of US-131 and US-10. The staff tries very hard to place the animals into loving forever homes. Their efforts include posting pet profiles on the shelter's website as well as on other sites such as Petfinder, Dogs in Danger, and Facebook.

As of today, the shelter is housing many cats and dogs of all ages and sizes. Adoption fees are extremely low, so if you're ready to adopt--or know someone who is--be sure to check out the wonderful pets available at the Osceola County Animal Shelter.

PostHeaderIcon Northwoods Animal Shelter

The Northwoods Animal Shelter is located in Iron River, which is in the far western part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The shelter's proximity to the Wisconsin state line makes it convenient for animal lovers from both states to see what it has to offer.

The Northwoods Animal Shelter is a nonprofit organization run by a group of volunteers. Currently, they are caring for 41 pets. Of the six dogs, five have videos available for viewing from their Petfinder page. What a terrific way to get a closer look at some amazing dogs!

The remaining 35 pets at this shelter are cats. There is quite a variety, so if you're interested in adopting a cat, this is a great place to look!

Check out their listing for more information. You'll be glad you did!

PostHeaderIcon Maple

Maple is a very nice American Staffordshire terrier, and she's been having a rough time. She's been at the shelter a long time. In fact, this is at least her second time at the same shelter!

In late January, after Maple had been at the Brownstown Animal Shelter for a while, she was designated "urgent." A few days later, she went to what she thought would be her forever home. Unfortunately, it didn't work out; through no fault of her own, she ended up at the shelter again two months later.

Maple is a real sweetie. She loves people, attention, and toys. She's a very cute and happy girl. The staff at the shelter aren't sure whether she's really a Staffie or not. If so, she's a very small one. Judging from her looks and actions, she's still a puppy, but her teeth seem to make her about a year old.

Maple's ideal forever home will really be forever. She will love her family so much! If possible, she would like to have a yard with a fence.

If you're interested in Maple, be sure to check out her Petfinder listing, which includes three photos of this sweet, pretty girl. (The first one, which isn't the one that's featured, really shows her sweetness.) In addition to potential adopters, rescue organizations are also more than welcome to give Maple the chance she deserves. The shelter is located in Brownstown Township, near Detroit.

PostHeaderIcon Luna

Luna is a mixed-breed dog available for adoption from the Benzie County Animal Shelter. The shelter is located in Beulah, a village in northern Michigan.

Luna is a very nice girl, and she's so pretty! She's black and white and looks a lot like a border collie. The volunteers at the shelter think she acts like a husky/hound mix. Luna is a very nice girl with energy to burn. Her ideal forever family will give her lots of time to run and play, and although Luna would live indoors, she would love to spend time outside with her family.

Luna has been at the shelter a long time, and she was placed on the urgent list almost thirteen weeks ago. Her Petfinder listing shows three great pictures of her. Adoption fees are low, so why not ask about this great girl today?

PostHeaderIcon Kent County Animal Shelter

Kent County Animal Control, located in Grand Rapids, serves one of the largest metropolitan areas in Michigan. It is open six days a week.

This shelter has a high turnover, and its Petfinder listings are updated frequently. Although they currently include 48 pets, 14 of them have been adopted. Of the remaining 34 pets, there are 18 dogs, 15 cats, and 1 bird.

Currently, the featured dog is Gina, a fawn pit bull mix about three years old. This pretty girl loves people and loves to give kissies!

In addition, the shelter has chosen to feature two cats. Norman is a handsome and friendly five-year-old brown tiger cat. Zig Zag is a very friendly and playful orange and white DSH boy; this handsome guy is 1-2 years old.

If you're interested in any of the pets at the Kent County Animal Shelter, please see their page for more information.

PostHeaderIcon Jackie

Jackie has been at the Homeward Bound Animal Shelter in Manistee since October! Her status changed to urgent in mid-February, so she really needs someone to get her out of there.

Jackie is a sweet, beautiful English coonhound mix about four years old. She's spunky and has a lot of energy, which means she would love a forever family that can keep up with her and spend lots of time with her outdoors.

For more information about Jackie, please see her Petfinder page, which includes three great photos of her.

The Manistee County Humane Society runs the shelter, which is located near M-55 and US 31.

PostHeaderIcon Honey

Honey is a baby pit bull only six to eight weeks old, and she's a very sweet little girl! She's being cared for by the Humane Society of Midland County. From her photo, she seems to be brown and white--and she's very cute!

She's not the only Honey around! There's another Honey, and she's in Beulah at Benzie County Animal Control. She's a pretty lab/hound mix with a beautiful brindle coat. She loves to play and go walkies.

PostHeaderIcon Gasow Veterinary Hospital

Dr. Frederick H. Gasow opened the Gasow Veterinary Hospital in 1933; Dr. Douglas Brooks has owned the clinic since 1993. It is located in Birmingham, which is in the greater Detroit area.

This clinic has eight veterinarians on staff. It is open seven days a week and has fantastic hours: 9am-9pm Monday through Friday, 9am-4pm Saturday, and 10am-2pm Sunday. Wow! That's impressive!

In addition to being a full-service animal hospital, the Gasow Veterinary Hospital also takes on the responsibility of trying to place homeless pets. Currently, they have three cats listed on Petfinder.

Scruffy is a stunningly gorgeous gray cat with medium-length hair (DMH). This sweet guy was rescued from a hoarding situation and has been in foster care since August.

Callie is a very friendly calico girl about four years old. She and Jack, a four-year-old tabby mix, have quite a history together. They were both adopted from a kill shelter but recently became homeless when their owners lost their home. They would love to be adopted again--together, if possible.

Gasow Veterinary Hospital's website has an informative newsletter as well as several medical articles.

If you're in the Birmingham area, check out this outstanding veterinary practice.

PostHeaderIcon FIDO Dog Rescue

FIDO Dog Rescue is based in Ann Arbor. Although many dogs in their care have come from high-kill shelters, FIDO also accepts dogs that have been surrendered directly to the rescue by their owners.

FIDO is a play on words; besides being a nickname for dogs, it's an acronym for Finding Incredible Dog Owners. As of today, they need to find incredible owners for seventeen incredible dogs of all ages and sizes. They also hope to find a home or homes for two kittens.

FIDO's Petfinder page shows a dog of the week. In addition, they hope to win some grant money in the Animal Rescue Site's contest.

PostHeaderIcon Every Animal Rescue League

Every Animal Rescue League is located in Clinton Township, in the greater Detroit area. Most of the animals in its care stay at the Animal Activity Center, which is owned an operated by Dr. Thomas Bankstahl, a veterinarian with a vision; he also runs the Parkway Small Animal & Exotic Hospital.

As of today, this rescue has seven pets listed on Petfinder. Listings for Blackie and Bella include one photo each.

Birds

Sweetie and Meanie are a pair of lovebirds about two and a half years old. One is male and one is female; the listing doesn't specify which is which. These birds are mostly green, with blue tails and beige or white faces. Since they're a pair, it would be nice for them to find a forever home together, but it isn't essential.

Cats

Blackie is a black domestic medium hair (DMH) cat, and she's the only kitty currently at Every Animal Rescue League. This sweet girl gets along great with kids, dogs, and other cats. What's not to love?

Dogs

Bella is a brown and white chihuahua about four years old. She's crate trained and loves goodies! She also loves dogs and cats but isn't crazy about small children.

Dexter is a cute black, brown, and white chihuahua/terrier mix. This little guy is about two years old, and he doesn't understand why his owner decided to give him to the shelter. Dexter gets along great with other dogs.

Luci was also in what she thought was a forever home, and then she ended up at the shelter. She's a sweet, lovable Jack Russell terrier. The listing says that she's an adult but doesn't specify her age. She would prefer a home without young children, so prospective adopters shouldn't have kids under twelve.

Trixie is an adorable Jack Russell terrier girl who was at the Macomb County Animal Shelter before finding her way to Every Animal Rescue League. She's looking for a forever home with a fenced yard. Kids and other dogs are a plus; she loves them! She even gets along with cats.

If you're interested in learning more about any of these great pets, please check out their Petfinder pages.

PostHeaderIcon Duke

Duke is a handsome seven-year-old pointer mix currently at the Greater Hillsdale Humane Society, and he needs help.

This poor guy came to my attention several months ago, and his Petfinder status hasn't changed. Until his arrival at the shelter, he spent his entire life outside. His friend Molly, a pretty seven-year-old lab mix, lived outside with him.

Duke never received much care. He got to eat, and he was neutered, but he wasn't on any kind of heartworm preventative. Because of this, he now has heartworm disease. This could have been prevented, but since it wasn't, Duke needs painful, expensive treatment. Fortunately, Molly does not have heartworm disease.

Duke is looking for sponsors for his heartworm treatment. He's also looking for a forever home so he can live inside--where he can spend his time with people and not have to endure those bitter Michigan winters out in the cold. He would love to have Molly join him and be part of his forever family, but that's not a deal breaker.

In the meantime, Duke would enjoy having visitors stop by the Greater Hillsdale Humane Society shelter and take him for a walk or do some training with him to help him become more adoptable. The shelter is in Osseo, which is near the junction of M-34 and M-99 in southern Michigan.

Duke is a sweet boy who doesn't deserve all this pain and heartache. Won't someone help him?

PostHeaderIcon Cats on This Week's List

There are usually quite a few urgent cats to tweet about every week. "Urgent" means that they have been designated as such by the shelter where they're staying, and it means that their time is running out. Normally, no date is given, but whenever you see "urgent," you know that they could be euthanized at any time.

Bullseye is at the Ionia County Animal Shelter. He's a handsome DSH/tiger cat mix. His main color seems to be gray, and he has some nice black markings. This shelter removes listings after a pet is no longer available, regardless of the reason. You can check their list of available pets to see whether Bullseye is still on it. Ionia is in southwestern Michigan.

On the other side of the state, Victor is waiting for someone to love. He's an adorable brown and white tabby mix, and he's about ten years old. He's a very sweet, calm guy, and all he really wants is a nice, quiet place to live where someone will give him the love he deserves. That's not too much to ask! He's at the Southgate Animal Shelter.

The Taylor Animal Shelter currently has four cats available for adoption. The females are a dilute tortoiseshell, a black DSH, and a young gray DSH/Russian blue mix. There's also a black and white DMH boy. They don't actually say "urgent," but the shelter doesn't seem to use that designation, so why take chances? They certainly seem to be urgent!

If you're not interested in any of the aforementioned cats, take a look at the Livingston County Animal Control site. This shelter, located in Howell, currently has thirty cats on the list! Check out Fireball, Tulip, Rascal, Sarah, Gino, Matilda, and the others.

As always, if you'd like to know more about a pet (or two!), please contact the shelter.

PostHeaderIcon Birdie

Birdie is such a sweet girl! She's a mix between a Plott hound and a boxer, and she's very pretty! She's been at the Homeward Bound Animal Shelter since September. Run by the Manistee County Humane Society, this shelter is located in Manistee, which is a Victorian city on Lake Michigan.

Birdie loves people and loves to play! She also likes other dogs as long as they don't try to boss her around. Because of her particular mix of breeds, this terrific girl weighs about 70 pounds, which means her forever home should be big enough to accommodate her. She's still young (only 2 or 3 years old), and she's already been spayed. Birdie's status is urgent, so it's very important for her to find a forever home soon.

Check out Birdie's Petfinder profile, which includes three photos of her. Does Birdie sound like the right dog for you? If so, contact the shelter to learn more about her. You'll be glad you did!

PostHeaderIcon Antrim County Animal Shelter

The Antrim County Shelter is located in Bellaire, which is in northern Michigan.

The shelter has low adoption fees and is open Monday through Friday. They gratefully accept donations and especially welcome food, toys, and grooming supplies for the cats and dogs staying there. They also love to get gift certificates for local veterinary clinics.

They currently list twelve pets; however, only ten are really at the shelter. Duchess is a German shepherd/Rottweiler mix currently in a foster home, and there are is a duplicate listing for Sidney the baby kitten.

The three dogs at the shelter are Jack, a young German shepherd/Rottweiler mix; black lab mix Buddy; and Lucy the beagle.

Sidney, Howard, Tony, and Hugo are domestic shorthair (DSH) baby boys. Paula is an adult DSH, and Pat and Terrance are adult DSH guys. All of them are very pretty!

If you're interested in learning more about any of these wonderful pets, be sure to contact the Antrim County Shelter!
